Day Off

Posted by Al Pastor

A soccer game penned me in. This is, so far the only drawback to my secret parking lot between the little miniature park and the swimming pools. If I don't get out early on Sunday, and if whoever double parks behind me is inattentive or unconcerned or nowhere to be found, I am stuck. Otherwise, one of my great neighborhood discoveries, akin to going all the way back into the furniture store that inhabits, hermit crab-like, the lobby of the old New Mission theater to find the cavernous theater space, seats in situ with boxed stock stacked on top of them. Between the high turnover of the users, other than me, and its unlikely and out of the way location, I often find a space there when every other space in the Mission seems full, and even though it is posted for permit parking and I do not have a permit, its remoteness causes the parking control division to generally bypass parking enforcement, so I can leave my car there for a few days at a time with a reasonable chance of not being rung up with a ticket.

I knew it would rain before long and the rain would break up the soccer game, and I would be able to get the car out. It was just a matter of time. It was muggy and the sky was gray/white. So I took a walk. I went to some thrift stores and the record store. I am looking for a black suit and some thermal underwear and Nico's CHELSEA GIRL, among other things. I bought myself a record player a while back, so I am back in the vinyl market. When I got done, finding none of the aforementioned stuff, there was no rain yet, but I went to check the car anyway. The game played on, the white pickup remained unmoved. I stood around for a few minutes, being obvious, honked a few times, but no one showed up to let me out, so I started thinking about lunch.

I got a taco. Still no rain and no motion. I went back to the apartment intending to finish A HERO OF OUR TIME. It was around 1:30. When I woke up around 3:30 it was raining full strength. The oscars pre-show/wank was underway. I laid around for probably another hour, debilitated by the sound of the pouring rain and the drone of Roger Ebert. Finally, I got up and put on the new NIck Cave record(s) and went after the dishes that had been piling in the sink since roughly Halloween and had that this morning begun, or I should say, I had noticed this morning that they had begun, to stink like very bad breath. This was the major accomplishment of the day. Watched as much of the OscarsTM as I could take and took a long bath. Still did not finish A HERO OF OUR TIME.
