Thoughtful, Principled and Articulate vs. Highly Entertaining

Posted by Trott

As a left-of-center kind of guy, I find it hard to list the most insufferable conservative pundit because I find so many of them so insufferable. It's easier to choose a conservative pundit that I like because the list is so much shorter.

I used to cite George Will as my favorite conservative pundit. He is thoughtful, principled, and articulate. Plus, he wears a bow tie.

I'm afraid that, at least today and at least for sheer entertainment value, I must declare my slight preference now for Mark Steyn.

He might say something like: "The ayatollahs at least flatter America as a seducer--the Great Satan--which is a more accurate and sophisticated construct than deriding her as the Great Moron."

Or he might say something like: "In 2002 the New York Times published a photograph of Palestinian suicide bombers all dressed up and ready to blow, and captioned it 'Hamas activists.' Take my advice and try not to be standing too near the Hamas activist when he activates himself."

As much as I disagree with him, George Will is thoughtful and, unlike so many of his ilk, he seems to be faithful to his conservative ideals even when it means breaking with the Republican Party, but something about that pinched expression and, especially, the bow tie make me want to dump water on his head. Plus, he has conflict-of-interest stories buzzing around him like flies on puke.
