Hours Played 2005: 57.25 YTD -$470

I am writing this Monday night, which means I probably will not post until, tomorrow, Tuesday, March 8. I haven’t played since last Tuesday, the first. I had yesterday off, and could have played, but I was sort of depressed and it felt like a chore, on top of which, I am somewhat broke. Not really. I mean, my utilities are still on and I am not going hungry. But, still, $470 down is a lot on a bookseller’s salary, and requires a little reflection.

I am itching to play tomorrow, though.

Last Tuesday, after all my talk of patience in game selection, when I saw the long list for $2-4 and the blank space in the $3-6 column, I took the $3-6. I had the opportunitiy to have dinner and discuss strategy discussing strategy with a fellow player who, through good fortune and a large contribution to a Portland charity auction, had lately had the opportunity to have dinner and discuss strategy with Annie Duke, who is generally regarded as the top woman player in the world. Annie imparted unto my friend her ultimate low-limit wisdom: GAME SELECTION IS EVERYTHING. But there was no wait. I got to sit right down.

It looked like it was going ok for a while. There was no one I recognized at the table, which is a little bit of a bad sign. I played a pair of sixes early on, which flopped into trips, then turned into a straight for an opponent, and then filled up into sixes full of fives for me, WHich was a pretty good pot and had me up for a while. I bled it all back, though, and then I bled away the chips I started with. It is too long ago to remember the details. I remember getting my last money in on a club flush draw that missed on the river. I am probably playing too many hands lately. I will have to watch that. And I will wait until my beard reaches my navel for a $2-4 seat.

!

Saturday, after a long dreary day at work, bouncing around my little apartment like a beer can in the bathtub and needing a little outside air I took a drive out to Lucky Chances in Colma, where I have played a few times and done poorly. The game is exceptionally loose, and the lowest limit they spread is $3-6, and the have an extra forced bet, so that it costs a minimum of $7 a round (10 hands) as a opposed to $4 at the Oaks Club for the same level game. I would play there if I had to, but not when the Oaks I just a little bit longer a drive in the opposite direction. My aforementioned friend, the one who had dinner with Annie Duke, had left me a message that she was going to be playing over there, though. She likes to play tjhere because they have a no limit game. I thought she might want to take a break and get something to eat. Like all of the Bay Area casinos, Lucky Chances caters largely to Filipinos and they have an excellent Chopsilog, an ass kicking breakfast of fried pork chop, garlic fried rice and two eggs.

The place was packed, but my friend had left. She left me a message as I was going in about losing a pile of chips she had just won before she had time to stack them. I watched a 7 card stud game for a while, then finished A HERO OF OUR TIME over my chopsilog.
