AT A ZOO IN BULGARIA

Posted by Robert Reid

All the Tired Horses DOBRICH, BULGARIA (April 2004) -- The purple-haired middle-aged Bulgarian was happy to have found me loitering at the Dobrich Art Gallery. Sniffling from Black Sea.fed cold, I was ushered back the next day--a two-hour trip each way--to be interviewed on Dobrich TV. A half-day trip I didn't have time for. A man with vinyl video cam bag, and an interviewer in pants suit, took me to a nearby zoo--the purple-haired woman wasn't around; couldn't be bothered--where we talked about travel and perceptions of Bulgaria. 'Have you found it dangerous?,' I was asked. 'No. People are nice.' I was baited on a few other slightly negative questions, but didn't succumb. I lost a day. I believe the show was never aired, but the cam man gave some political illustrations he made and a slightly too-long handshake at the bus station.
